  • In a move that caught many by surprise, Starlink today imposed roaming restrictions on users who have been utilizing their satellite internet outside their registered service country for more than 60 days. This change primarily affects Zimbabweans who have been using Starlink units brought in from other countries. The email sent to affected subscribers was direct:

"Your Starlink has been restricted for active use outside of your account country for greater than the 60 days included with your 'Roam Unlimited' service plan. To resume service, please return your Starlink to the country in which your service was ordered."

The change means that Zimbabweans who have been relying on Starlink from neighboring countries will need to either return the devices to their country of origin or deal with an uncomfortable reality, service interruptions in a country where reliable and affordable internet is hard to come by.

For those affected, there are several options available:

Temporary Return: Users can return their devices to their country of registration, reactivate service there, and then bring them back to Zimbabwe for another 60-day roaming period.

Country Transfer: Users can transfer their service to Zimbabwe, but options vary by location:

    • Outside Harare: Users can switch to local residential plans starting at $30 or roaming plan at $100
    • Harare Residents: Due to capacity constraints, only the more expensive roaming plan at USD100 is available

    What Happens Next?

For now, it’s a waiting game. Users can hope that Starlink will increase capacity in Harare or that local ISPs will recognize the gap and improve their services. Until then, Zimbabwe’s Starlink users must make tough decisions about how they want to stay connected.
