Whenever Apple unveils a new version of iOS, iPhone users immediately ask two questions: Will my iPhone get the update? And will I get the new AI features everyone is talking about?
At WWDC 2026, Apple introduced iOS 27, packed with a smarter Siri, expanded Apple Intelligence capabilities, improved photo editing tools and a range of quality-of-life improvements across the iPhone experience.
The good news is that many older iPhones will still receive iOS 27. The not-so-good news is that not all of them will get the full suite of AI features.
Will Your iPhone Get iOS 27?
Despite rumours that Apple would finally drop support for the iPhone 11 lineup, the company extended support for another year.
According to Apple, iOS 27 will be available on all iPhones currently running iOS 26, including devices released as far back as 2019.
Full List Of iPhones That Support iOS 27
If you own any of the following devices, you'll be able to install iOS 27 when it launches later this year:
- iPhone 11
- iPhone 11 Pro
- iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 12 mini
- iPhone 12
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 13 mini
- iPhone 13
- iPhone 13 Pro
- iPhone 13 Pro Max
- iPhone 14
- iPhone 14 Plus
- iPhone 14 Pro
- iPhone 14 Pro Max
- iPhone 15
- iPhone 15 Plus
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 16 series
- iPhone 17 series
- iPhone SE (2nd generation and newer)
If your device is on this list, you'll continue receiving Apple's latest software updates, security patches and general improvements.
But Will You Get The New AI Features?
This is where things become a bit more complicated.
While iOS 27 supports all of the devices listed above, Apple Intelligence features require newer hardware. That means some iPhones will get iOS 27 but miss out on the headline AI experiences.
Features such as the upgraded Siri, advanced writing assistance, intelligent photo tools and other on-device AI capabilities are only available on supported models with the necessary processing power.
These iPhones Get The Full Apple Intelligence Experience
If you want all of Apple's AI features announced with iOS 27, you'll need one of the following devices:
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
- All iPhone 16 models
- All iPhone 17 models
These devices have the newer chips and memory requirements needed to run Apple Intelligence features both on-device and through Apple's Private Cloud Compute system.
In practical terms, an iPhone 11 owner can install iOS 27 and enjoy the latest operating system, but they won't necessarily get the same experience as someone using one of the supported AI models listed above.
So before upgrading solely for iOS 27, it's worth asking whether you simply want the latest software or whether you also want Apple's newest AI capabilities.
Apple Is Also Changing How AI Usage Works
Another important announcement from WWDC 2026 is that Apple is introducing usage limits for some of its more advanced cloud-powered AI features.
Users will continue to have access to a free tier of Apple Intelligence, but those who need higher limits will be able to extend their usage through eligible iCloud+ subscriptions.
Apple says iCloud+ plans will unlock additional capacity for these cloud-based AI experiences, making them more useful for people who rely heavily on AI-assisted writing, image generation and other intensive tasks.
For casual users, the free allocation may be enough. However, power users could find themselves considering an iCloud+ subscription not just for extra storage, but also for expanded access to Apple's AI tools.
What This Means For Zimbabwean iPhone Users
This distinction between iOS support and AI support is particularly important in Zimbabwe, where many people buy pre-owned iPhones imported from overseas.
The iPhone 11, iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 remain some of the most popular models in local smartphone shops. The fact that these devices continue to receive iOS updates is excellent news, as users can keep benefiting from security updates and new software refinements.
However, anyone specifically interested in Apple's latest AI features should pay closer attention to which iPhone they're buying.
If Apple Intelligence is a priority, it's best to look for at least an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max. The standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus support iOS 27 but do not get the full set of AI capabilities.
A cheaper used iPhone may run iOS 27 perfectly well, but it may not deliver the AI experience Apple showcased on stage at WWDC.
When Will iOS 27 Be Available?
The developer beta is already available, while a public beta is expected in the coming weeks.
Apple is expected to release the final version of iOS 27 globally around September, alongside its next generation of iPhones.
The bottom line is simple: if you own an iPhone 11 or newer, you'll likely get iOS 27. But if you want the full Apple Intelligence experience — and potentially higher AI usage limits through iCloud+ — you'll need an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or a newer iPhone 16 or iPhone 17 model.
