  • If you make online payments often in Zimbabwe, you know the ritual: cross your fingers, pray the card gateway works, and hope the dreaded "transaction failed" screen doesn't swallow your money.

Fortunately, there's now a way to break that ritual and make online payments with confidence. I've been using the O'mari Virtual Visa Card for over a year, and I have to say, it's been a pleasant experience. While EcoCash Virtual Card has long been the market leader, O'mari brings some serious advantages to the table that, in my view, make it the superior choice. This review shares my personal experience and explains why the O'mari Virtual Visa has become my go-to for online transactions.

    Getting Started with Omari

One of the first things I appreciated about the Omari Virtual Visa Card is how easy it is to get compared to getting physical cards. You can get a virtual Visa card for a small fee, usually around US$0.50, and the sign-up process is quick, either through a simple phone code (*707#) or their mobile app. This straightforward approach means you can get set up and ready to make online payments in no time.

Once you have it, the card is incredibly versatile. I've used it for all sorts of online payments, from subscribing to Spotify and Netflix to shopping on sites like Shein. It's accepted widely, which is a huge plus when you're dealing with international online payments and works all the time i have used.

Omari vs. Ecocash: Why Omari Wins

For a long time, Ecocash Virtual Mastercard was the go-to for many online payments in Zimbabwe. However, after using both, I can confidently say that Omari offers some significant advantages that make it a clear winner in my book. Here's why:

    Reliability and Clear Communication

One of the biggest frustrations with online payments in Zimbabwe is when a transaction fails, and you're left guessing why. With Omari, this simply isn't an issue. As I mentioned, it "works all the time." But what truly sets it apart is its communication. If a transaction doesn't go through, Omari immediately sends you a message via SMS or WhatsApp. This message clearly states the exact amount of the failed transaction and how much money you need in your account for it to succeed. This level of detail is fantastic; you don't have to wonder or calculate; you know exactly what to do. This is a huge improvement over other cards where failed transactions often come with no explanation.

    Hassle-Free Refunds

This is a major point for me. I've had refunds stuck with Ecocash since last year, which is incredibly frustrating. With O'mari, it's different-you can get refunds easily by contacting their support or having the merchant process a reversal. This means that if a purchase doesn't go through, or you need to return something, getting your money back is a smooth process. The peace of mind knowing your funds won't be held hostage is invaluable.

I once made a payment to Starlink, and there was an issue, the payment failed on Starlink's end, but O'mari still debited my account. I contacted O'mari support, and they were very helpful. They traced the transaction, identified the problem, and after a day or so, my money was refunded along with the charges. I didn't have to fill out any forms or visit a branch to get my refund.

    Longer Validity, Less Cost

Another significant advantage is the card's lifespan. My Omari Virtual Mastercard expires after five years, which is a stark contrast to the Ecocash card that expires after just one year. This longer validity means I don't have to worry about renewal fees, like the 50 cents Ecocash charges every time you generate a new card. Over time, this saves both money and the hassle of constantly renewing your card.

Funding my Omari card is also very convenient. I can use agents or transfer money directly using the Zipit platform. This means I can easily move funds from my Ecocash account or my bank account to Omari. What's more, and this is a crucial point, "if a transaction fails it doesn't deduct any money unlike other banks cards (ummm FBC)."

    Understanding the Costs

When choosing any financial product, the costs involved are always a big consideration. I find Omari's fee structure to be quite fair and, more importantly, transparent. For online payments, there's a 1.65% fee, and if your transaction is over US$5, there's an additional 2% government tax (IMTT). This means if I make a US$10 purchase, the total extra cost is about US$0.365 (US$0.165 for Omari and US$0.20 for the tax). The initial card generation fee is also a very reasonable US$0.50.

The clarity of Omari's fees means I can easily calculate the total cost before I make a purchase, which helps me manage my spending better. And as I mentioned before, the fact that Omari doesn't deduct money for failed transactions is a huge financial safety net that many other cards don't offer.

My Overall Experience: Reliability and Support

My personal experience with the Omari Virtual Mastercard has been overwhelmingly positive. The card's consistent reliability means I rarely encounter issues, making my online payment experience smooth and stress-free. This 'it just works' factor is incredibly important.

The clear and instant messages about failed transactions are another highlight. It shows that Omari has really thought about the user experience. Instead of being left in the dark, I get immediate feedback, which helps me understand what happened and how to fix it quickly.

This level of communication builds trust and reduces any anxiety around online payments. While I haven't had to interact extensively with their customer support, the overall positive experience suggests that their support system is effective and responsive. Knowing that good support is available if needed adds another layer of confidence when using the card.

    Final Verdict

In conclusion, the Omari Virtual Mastercard has truly impressed me. For anyone in Zimbabwe who frequently makes online payments, it offers a compelling and often superior alternative to other virtual cards on the market. Its consistent reliability, transparent and efficient refund process, extended validity period, and flexible funding options make it a standout choice.
