For years, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp have been free services supported mainly through advertising. That is beginning to change.

Meta has officially launched paid subscription plans called Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus and WhatsApp Plus. While the free versions of the apps are staying, subscribers will get access to additional features, customization options and engagement tools.

The move is part of Meta’s broader strategy to create new revenue streams beyond advertising while also funding its growing artificial intelligence ambitions.

The big question for users is simple: are these subscriptions actually worth paying for?

The Prices

Meta says the subscriptions will cost:

  • Instagram Plus — US$3.99 per month
  • Facebook Plus — US$3.99 per month
  • WhatsApp Plus — US$2.99 per month

The company is rolling them out globally.

Instagram Plus: Built For Creators, Influencers And Heavy Users

Instagram Plus is probably the most feature-packed of the three plans.

One of its biggest additions is Story analytics. Subscribers can see how many times people rewatched their Stories, not just how many people viewed them. This gives creators and businesses a better idea of what content is holding people's attention.

Users also get:

  • Unlimited Story audience lists
  • Extended Story visibility beyond the normal 24-hour period
  • Story spotlight boosts
  • Viewer search tools
  • Anonymous Story previews
  • Advanced Story engagement insights

These features are clearly aimed at people who use Instagram professionally or are trying to grow an audience.

More Profile Customization

Instagram Plus subscribers can also personalize their accounts with:

  • Custom profile bio fonts
  • Custom app icons
  • Additional profile pins
  • Animated "Super Heart" reactions
  • Special Story reactions

These features do not necessarily improve functionality, but they help users stand out visually.

Who Is It For?

For casual users who mainly scroll through reels and post occasionally, Instagram Plus may not offer enough value.

However, influencers, content creators, photographers, artists and businesses could find the analytics and audience tools useful because understanding engagement often helps improve content performance.

Facebook Plus: Similar Features, Different Audience

Facebook Plus shares many features with Instagram Plus but is tailored more toward Facebook communities, pages and audience management.

Subscribers get:

  • Enhanced Story analytics
  • Story rewatch statistics
  • Longer-lasting Stories
  • Audience management tools
  • Extra profile customization options
  • Animated reactions
  • Additional profile visibility tools

Meta is also reportedly testing features that can increase content visibility and audience engagement.

For someone running a business page, community group or personal brand on Facebook, these tools could be useful.

For the average Facebook user who mainly checks family updates and marketplace listings, the benefits may feel less compelling.

WhatsApp Plus: Mostly About Personalization

WhatsApp Plus is very different from the other subscriptions.

Instead of focusing on audience growth and analytics, it focuses on customization and organization.

Subscribers get access to:

  • Custom themes
  • Premium stickers
  • Exclusive ringtones
  • Custom app icons
  • More pinned chats
  • Enhanced chat organization tools
  • Additional chat list controls

One feature allows users to pin up to 20 chats, compared to the much smaller limit available on standard WhatsApp. This could be useful for people who manage multiple work and personal conversations daily.

However, it is important to note that WhatsApp Plus does not unlock new messaging capabilities. Messages, voice calls, video calls and end-to-end encryption remain available for free users.

Meta Is Also Monetizing AI

The Plus subscriptions are only the beginning.

Meta has also announced new AI-focused plans under a brand called Meta One.

The company is testing:

  • Meta One Plus — US$7.99/month
  • Meta One Premium — US$19.99/month

These plans target users who rely heavily on Meta AI and want higher limits for AI-generated images, videos and advanced AI reasoning features.

In many ways, this mirrors what OpenAI, Google and Anthropic are already doing with ChatGPT Plus, Gemini Advanced and Claude Pro.

Are These Plans Worth It For Zimbabweans?

For most Zimbabweans, probably not.

At current prices, Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus cost roughly the equivalent of a basic monthly streaming subscription. Paying for multiple Meta subscriptions could easily exceed US$10 per month before accounting for mobile data costs.

The features also fall into two categories:

The first category is genuinely useful tools such as analytics, audience insights and account management features.

The second category is cosmetic upgrades like custom icons, animated reactions, premium stickers and profile customization.

Most casual users will likely see the second category as nice extras rather than necessities.

Creators, influencers, online sellers and businesses are the group most likely to benefit because better engagement data can help them understand what content works and what does not.

The Bigger Shift Happening

What makes Meta's announcement important is not necessarily the features themselves.

It is the fact that one of the world's largest social media companies is increasingly treating social media like a subscription service.

A few years ago, paying monthly for Facebook or WhatsApp would have sounded ridiculous. Today, it is becoming reality.

The free versions are staying for now. But the launch of Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus and WhatsApp Plus shows where the industry is heading: social media companies want users to become paying customers, not just audiences for advertisements.
