  • EcoCash, the largest mobile money platform in Zimbabwe, went down today for over four hours, leaving users unable to access most services. While the Point of Sale (POS) system was still working, the outage caused inconvenience for many people and businesses.

Some traders could not process payments, leading to missed sales and unhappy customers. People needing to send or receive money for emergencies were also affected. However, compared to previous outages, the reaction on social media has been quiet, showing that EcoCash is no longer as essential as it once was.

EcoCash was once the most important mobile money service in Zimbabwe. Over the years, its popularity has dropped. Many users are frustrated by high transaction fees and the government’s 2% tax on mobile money. Because of this, people have started using cheaper alternatives or cash instead. Competitors with lower fees are now more popular, and cash is becoming the preferred choice for many due to ongoing economic challenges. EcoCash has not yet explained what caused the outage or when full services will return.
