Sometimes the best apps are not born in boardrooms or startup pitch decks. They begin with a simple family request.
That is the story behind BunnyNest Tracker, an app created by Zimbabwean developer Audrey Chanakira to help rabbit breeders manage their operations more efficiently.
What started as a practical tool for one rabbit farmer has now found users in other countries, proving once again that local problems can inspire products with global relevance.
Built for a Real Farming Need
Audrey says the idea came from her brother, who breeds rabbits.
He wanted a clean, printable PDF that could help him manage his does and bucks while keeping proper breeding records. One major concern was avoiding breeding rabbits that are related, something that can create long-term problems for a breeding operation.
That request sparked a bigger idea.
Instead of creating a static document, Audrey decided to build something smarter and easier to use. Since her brother uses an iPhone, she quickly developed the app specifically for him and later published it on Apple’s App Store.
What happened next was unexpected.
People from outside Zimbabwe began downloading and using it.
“I originally intended it as a quick, practical tool for my brother, but it ended up reaching a much wider audience,” she said.
Why BunnyNest Tracker Stands Out
Agriculture software can sometimes feel bloated, technical, and overwhelming, especially for small-scale farmers who just need something that works.
Audrey says they explored other tools, but many felt too complicated and packed with unnecessary features.
That experience shaped the direction of BunnyNest Tracker.
Rather than trying to do everything, the app focuses on the everyday needs of rabbit breeders. It is clean, practical, and designed to simplify record keeping without creating extra work.
That kind of thinking matters in Zimbabwe, where many farmers prefer straightforward tools that solve real problems quickly.
Features Rabbit Farmers May Appreciate
BunnyNest Tracker is designed to help breeders stay organised and make better decisions.
It helps automate bunny tracking, reducing the need for paper records.
Users can store details about each rabbit, including breed type, weight, and mating history.
The app also includes quick charts that give an overview of all rabbits in the system.
For breeders managing multiple animals, that visibility can make a real difference.
Meet the Developer Behind the App
Audrey Chanakira brings deep international experience to a project that began as a family favour.
She is a mobile application developer with more than eight years of experience building and scaling production-grade apps across iOS, Android, and enterprise platforms.
Audrey started her career as an iOS developer before growing into architecture and leadership roles, helping take products from concept stage to deployment and long-term maintenance.
She also has a strong interest in edge AI, where intelligent systems run directly on devices rather than relying entirely on the cloud. Audrey presented some of this work at IndabaX Namibia, demonstrating on-device AI using CoreML and MobileNet.
And yes, she also delivered a TEDx Talk titled If you’re not into AI, then AI is definitely into you.
Will the App Expand Beyond iPhone?
For Android users wondering if BunnyNest Tracker is coming their way, Audrey says the answer is yes, eventually.
“Absolutely, but only if time permits,” she said.
Being a solo developer means balancing ideas, coding, updates, and day-to-day responsibilities alone. That reality is familiar to many independent creators in Zimbabwe and beyond.
How the App Makes Money
Right now, BunnyNest Tracker remains free for hobbyists.
Audrey says she has several monetisation ideas but has not yet committed to one clear path. For now, her focus is on building and shipping useful products first, then formalising a business strategy once she becomes more intentional about her target market.
That is a practical approach many developers can relate to: build value first, refine the business model later.
Bigger Plans Focused on Zimbabwe
While BunnyNest Tracker is one project, Audrey says her bigger mission is building meaningful Zimbabwe-focused applications and systems.
She believes Zimbabwe needs more locally grounded digital platforms that generate contextual data and insights about how citizens interact with technology.
In her view, data has become a form of currency. Relying too heavily on foreign platforms can limit how countries fully benefit from AI systems trained around local realities and needs.
Advice to Zimbabwean Developers
Audrey’s message to local developers is clear: build intentionally.
She says Zimbabwe already has the technical talent. What is often missing is confidence, coordination, and belief that local ideas matter.
She encourages developers not to focus only on the next million-dollar app, but also on the broader ecosystem Zimbabwe needs: policymakers, cybersecurity specialists, infrastructure engineers, hardware builders, researchers, and system designers.
That wider thinking matters.
A Good Example of Zimbabwean Problem Solving
There is something refreshing about this story. No hype. No buzzwords. Just a developer noticing a genuine need and building a useful solution.
Zimbabwe has many talented developers creating tools quietly, often solving everyday problems that larger companies overlook. BunnyNest Tracker is a reminder that meaningful innovation does not always have to target millions of users from day one.
Sometimes helping one person well is enough to build something others need too.
