  • OpenAI has launched a new feature for ChatGPT users called “Study Mode,” aimed at helping students and lifelong learners not just get answers, but truly understand what they’re learning. It’s a move that could reshape how artificial intelligence is used in education especially in Zimbabwe, where access to quality educational support can be uneven.

For years, ChatGPT has been popular for helping users get quick responses whether it’s solving a math problem, rewriting an essay, or answering history questions. But that convenience has also created a growing problem: many students were using it just to copy answers, not to understand the subject.

With Study Mode, OpenAI is shifting focus. Instead of giving a straight answer, ChatGPT now takes a more hands-on, teaching-based approach. It guides users through the process, asks reflective questions, offers hints, and encourages users to think critically. The idea is to simulate a tutor not a cheat sheet.

For instance, if a learner asks how to solve a maths equation, Study Mode won’t just dump the solution. It will ask what the learner already knows, where they’re stuck, and walk them through the logic step-by-step.

Study Mode is now available to all ChatGPT users, whether you’re using the free version or paying for ChatGPT Plus. You can activate it by clicking the “Study” book icon in the ChatGPT interface. Even ChatGPT Team and Enterprise users have access.

In Zimbabwe, where learners face challenges like overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages, and expensive private tuition, access to a free AI tutor could be a game-changer. Study Mode could help students in rural and urban areas alike better understand complex subjects especially when human help isn’t available.

But it’s not just about students. Adult learners trying to reskill, parents helping children with homework, or professionals brushing up on topics can also benefit. As long as you have a stable internet connection and basic digital skills, you can learn on your own terms.

OpenAI’s Study Mode represents a significant step towards making personalized, active learning more accessible. For Zimbabwe, this technology offers a unique opportunity to augment traditional learning methods and potentially mitigate some of the challenges posed by limited resources and large class sizes. It can serve as a valuable supplementary tool, empowering students to take greater ownership of their learning journeys and develop a deeper understanding of complex subjects.
