In a move that underscores Zimbabwe’s ongoing digital transformation, the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) has released the Grade 7 results online. The days of waiting for schools to distribute physical result slips are fading into memory, replaced by a streamlined and tech-forward solution.
Accessing results is as simple as heading over to www.zimsec.co.zw, but as with any new system, there are a few nuances to navigate. Before diving in, you’ll need to register, which involves providing details about the student and confirming your role as their legal guardian.
What You’ll Need to Register
To access the results, you’ll need to register on the ZIMSEC platform. The process requires the following details:
- The candidate’s full name
- The candidate number
- The centre number
- The candidate’s date of birth (D.O.B.)
These details are essential for verifying the candidate's identity and ensuring only authorized guardians access the results.
Steps to Access Results Online
- Visit the official ZIMSEC website: www.zimsec.co.zw
- Click on View Results on the homepage.
- Select your province.
- Choose the option to Register a New User.
- Fill out the consent form to confirm that you are the guardian.
- Provide your child’s details, including their candidate number and other required information.
- Enter your account creation details, such as username and password.
While the process is straightforward, there’s a tricky part when creating your account. ZIMSEC’s system requires a strong password that includes at least one capital letter, a number, and a special character. If your password doesn’t meet these criteria, the website might show an error message stating that your child’s details were not found. This error can be confusing, as it suggests an issue with your child’s information rather than the password itself. We hope ZIMSEC addresses this misleading error soon.
A Statement from ZIMSEC
Speaking at the announcement, ZIMSEC chairperson Paul Mapfumo provided key insights into the 2024 results.
"A total of 387,429 candidates sat for one to six subjects during the 2024 Grade 7 examinations as compared to 372,603 candidates in 2023, showing a 3.98% increase in candidature. The 2024 Grade 7 Examination session recorded a national pass rate of 49.01% for candidates who sat for six subjects. This is an increase of 3.44% in candidates’ performance from last year’s pass rate of 45.57%," said Mapfumo.
He attributed the improvement to various interventions by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, emphasizing that all subjects recorded pass rates above 50%, with Shona and Physical Education exceeding 80%. Notably, Xhosa was examined for the first time and achieved a pass rate of 72%.
Female Candidates Outshine Males
Of the 387,429 candidates, 199,939 were female, recording a pass rate of 53.68% compared to 43.99% for males. This mirrors the trend from 2023, where female candidates also performed better.
A Digital Leap Forward
For all its quirks, this system represents a monumental shift for Zimbabwean education. Years ago, parents endured long waits for results to arrive at schools, followed by time-consuming trips to collect them. Today, results are available with just a few clicks.
This is a significant win for convenience, even if the user experience isn’t entirely frictionless. By adopting digital-first solutions, ZIMSEC is not only improving accessibility but also showing a commitment to modernizing its services in line with global standards.
Congratulations to the students who’ve reached this milestone, and here’s hoping the system evolves to make this process even smoother in the years to come.
