  • Zimbabwean Gmail users are facing a growing and quietly alarming problem: Google is failing to deliver one-time password (OTP) verification messages to local mobile networks. What used to be a quick security step has turned into a major digital barrier, locking people out of their own accounts at the worst possible moments.

Reports from Econet and NetOne subscribers tell the same story. You request a verification SMS, wait a few seconds, then a few minutes… and nothing arrives. For many users, especially those trying to recover accounts after phone theft or device failure, this delay isn’t just inconvenient, it’s devastating.

When a phone is stolen, damaged, or undergoing repairs, Gmail continues to send security codes to the same number linked to the account. If that message never comes through, access is blocked entirely.

But while the OTP issue continues, there is a simple solution that most Zimbabweans are overlooking: Gmail Backup Codes.

Backup codes serve as Gmail’s emergency keys, a set of ten unique numbers that allow you to sign into your account without needing your phone, SIM card or authenticator app. Each code works once, and they act as a last-resort alternative when Google’s regular OTP messages fail to come through.

Setting them up is quick. Users can visit myaccount.google.com, navigate to the Security section, open 2-Step Verification, and scroll down to generate their Backup Codes. Google instantly provides ten one-time-use codes that can be stored offline.

Where you keep these codes matters. Saving them in Gmail or WhatsApp defeats their purpose, because you could lose access to both services at the same time. Digital safety experts advise storing them somewhere offline and secure, printed and kept in a safe place, saved in a notebook, or stored inside a password manager you trust.

Given Zimbabwe’s rising cases of phone theft, frequent SIM replacements, slow device repair cycles and now inconsistent Google OTP delivery, backup codes have become more than just a good idea. They are a critical lifeline.

A single failed OTP can cut you off from essential communication, personal memories, academic records, and even your business data. Backup codes eliminate that risk entirely, ensuring you can access your account when it matters most.

As Zimbabwe moves deeper into digital services, small steps like generating Gmail backup codes can protect users from major disruptions. For anyone relying on Gmail, whether for school, work, business or family; setting them up today isn’t just smart. It’s urgent.
